The ten-day festival culminates in Vijayadashami, the "Tenth Day of Victory." The intense, building energy of the Navadurga transforms into absolute, unshakeable triumph. On this day, we honor the Mother Goddess in her most victorious forms: Mahishasura Mardini (the slayer of the buffalo demon) and Goddess Aparajita (the invincible one). Dussehra is an incredibly auspicious day; it marks the physical death of human ego and the ultimate victory of cosmic order (Dharma) over chaos.
The Epic Tales of Victory
Day 10 beautifully weaves together two of the greatest triumphs in Hindu mythology:
The Slaying of the Demon (Mahishasura Mardini)
For nine nights, Goddess Durga fought a world-shattering battle against the shape-shifting buffalo demon, Mahishasura. On the tenth day, he transformed into a massive buffalo to crush her. In a flash of divine wrath, she pinned him down with her foot and drove her trident through his chest, saving the universe and earning the title Mahishasura Mardini.
Lord Rama & Goddess Aparajita
Before Lord Rama crossed the ocean to battle the ten-headed demon king Ravana, he performed a special puja during the afternoon of Vijayadashami. He worshipped Goddess Aparajita, the unvanquished, invincible aspect of the Divine Mother, seeking her blessing for absolute victory. Empowered by her, Rama marched on Lanka and struck down Ravana on this very day.
Iconography & Symbolism
Mahishasura Mardini
She is depicted at the dramatic climax of the cosmic war. She stands triumphantly on her ferocious lion. One foot rests heavily on the buffalo demon's body, symbolizing the suppression of base animalistic desires and pure ego. Her primary hands plunge the Trident (Trishul) into his chest, while her face remains miraculously calm and compassionate.
Goddess Aparajita
Often worshipped symbolically through the Aparajita vine (Clitoria ternatea, featuring vibrant blue flowers), she represents the subtle, invincible energy of nature that cannot be defeated by any weapon or force.

Unlike the previous 9 days that focus on planetary remedies, Dussehra features a universal window of supreme astrological power known as the Vijay Muhurat. Any new venture, business, purchase, or spiritual practice started during this specific window is guaranteed to be successful and invincible.

Step-by-Step Ritual during Vijay Muhurat:
Aparajita Puja
Cleanse a sacred spot in the Northeast corner of your home. Draw an eight-petaled lotus using sandalwood paste or turmeric. Place the Aparajita plant (or its blue flowers) in the center and worship her, asking for invincibility in your life goals.
Shastra Puja (Ayudha Puja)
Dussehra is the day to worship the tools of your trade. Place your laptops, books, musical instruments, business ledgers, or physical tools on the altar. Sprinkle holy water on them, apply a turmeric/kumkum tilak, and pray for success in your profession.
Shami Tree Worship
Offer water and light a lamp near a Shami tree at dusk, mirroring the Pandavas who retrieved their weapons from this tree on Vijayadashami.
Special Milestones: Visarjan & Breaking the Fast (Parana)
Dussehra is the official day to conclude the Navratri Vrat (fast) and perform the Visarjan (immersion) of the sacred items.
Kalash Visarjan
Gently move the Kalash that was placed on Day 1. Take the coconut placed on top and break it as Prasad for the family. Sprinkle the holy water from the Kalash in all corners of your home to purify it.
Khetri (Barley) Distribution
Pluck the green shoots of the barley you grew over the last 9 days. Place a few shoots behind the ears of family members or in your safe/wallet as a symbol of the Goddess's enduring prosperity.
Parana (Breaking the Fast)
After the morning puja and Visarjan, the fast is officially broken. Devotees transition back to a normal diet, consuming a celebratory, sattvic meal that includes grains (like rice or wheat) for the first time in nine days.
