Goddess Brahmacharini
The second day belongs to Goddess Brahmacharini, the form the Goddess took while performing her legendary penance to win Lord Shiva. Here “Brahma” means tapas (penance) and “charini” means the one who practises it. She is the patron of students, seekers, and anyone holding a vow. Her worship grants self-control, inner strength, and the calm certainty that discipline outlasts desire.
A Famous Tale of the Goddess
After being reborn as Parvati, the Goddess was told by the sage Narada that Lord Shiva could only be won through severe penance. She left her palace for the forest and lived as an ascetic for thousands of years — first on fruit and roots, then on bilva leaves alone, and at last on nothing at all, earning her the name Aparna, “one who does not even take a leaf.”
Her tapas grew so intense that the three worlds trembled and the gods themselves came to plead for its end. Lord Brahma appeared before her and blessed her, promising that Shiva would be hers. The lesson of Day 2 is that no grace arrives without discipline: the Goddess herself had to earn it.
Iconography & Symbolism
Goddess Brahmacharini is worshipped as the serene ascetic, radiant with the glow of penance.
The Mount (Vahana)
She has no mount. She walks barefoot as an ascetic does — a reminder that on this path the seeker's own effort is what carries them.
The Right Hand
She holds a Japa Mala (rosary), the emblem of steady, repeated practice and of vows kept even when no one is watching.
The Left Hand
She carries a Kamandalu (water pot), the ascetic's only possession, symbolizing simplicity and a mind purified of wants.
Her White Attire
She is dressed in plain white, the color of absolute purity, austerity, and a heart free of pretence.

Step-by-Step Ritual:
Bathe early and wear white, the color of the second day.
Water the barley seeds sown at Ghatasthapana before you begin.
Place the image of Goddess Brahmacharini and offer chrysanthemum flowers.
Offer mishri, panchamrit, and fresh fruit as bhog.
Chant the Brahmacharini mantra 108 times on a rudraksha mala.
Close with the Aarti and take one vow you intend to keep for all nine days.
