Navratri 2026
Nine Nights of the Divine Feminine and the Path to Dussehra
Navratri 2026
Navratri is one of the most vibrant and spiritually profound festivals in the Hindu tradition. Celebrated over nine nights during the seasonal shift in October, it honors the divine feminine, specifically Goddess Durga, and represents the ultimate victory of cosmic order over chaos. It is a powerful cultural reset, nine days dedicated to clearing away negativity and ignorance, leading directly to the grand culmination of Dussehra (Vijayadashami) on the tenth day.
The festival unites epic triumphs of good over evil. The core of Navratri honors Goddess Durga's spectacular nine-night battle and victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. This intensely building energy culminates on Dussehra, which also celebrates Lord Rama defeating Ravana to destroy human vices like ego and greed, and the end of the Pandavas' long exile.

Coming SoonDaily Navratri Puja & The 9-Day Fast (Vrat)
The heart of Navratri is the daily devotion and purification observed over the nine days, culminating in the grand Dussehra Puja on the tenth day.
The Daily Navratri Puja Guide
This ritual should be performed twice daily, once in the morning after bathing, and once in the evening.
Required Samagri (Ingredients)
A pure ghee or sesame oil lamp (Akhand Jyoti, kept lit for 9 days if possible).
Incense sticks (agarbatti) and Dhoop.
Fresh flowers (red flowers like hibiscus or roses are preferred for Goddess Durga).
A Kalash (copper pot) with clean water, mango leaves, and a coconut on top.
Turmeric (haldi), vermilion (kumkum), unbroken rice (akshat), and sandalwood paste (chandan).
Daily offerings of fruits, milk, or homemade sattvic sweets.
1. Purify & Prepare
Wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean, freshly washed clothes. Clean the puja space before beginning.
2. Kalash Sthapana (Ghatasthapana)
Only done on Day 1. On the first day, place the Kalash on a bed of soil and barley seeds. This represents the Goddess's energy and remains untouched for nine days until the seeds sprout.
3. Light the Lamp & Invoke Ganesha
Light the ghee lamp and incense. Always begin by praying to Lord Ganesha to remove any obstacles from your devotion.
4. Worship the Navadurga of the Day
Meditate on the specific form of Goddess Durga assigned to that day. Chant her mantra 108 times, offer red flowers, kumkum, and rice to her idol or image.
5. Chant Mantras & Read the Durga Saptashati
Chant the universal Navdurga mantra 'Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche' 108 times, or read a chapter of the Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya).
6. Offer Bhog (Prasad) & Perform Aarti
Offer the daily sattvic bhog to the Goddess. Conclude by singing the Durga Aarti while moving the lit lamp in clockwise circles. Distribute the blessed Prasad to family members.
The Epic Triumphs Behind the Festival
Goddess Durga & Mahishasura
The buffalo demon Mahishasura held a boon that no man or god could kill him, and he seized the heavens. The combined fury of the Trinity took form as Goddess Durga, who battled him through nine relentless nights and slayed him on the tenth day, earning the name Mahishasuramardini.
Lord Rama & Ravana
Before marching on Lanka, Lord Rama invoked Goddess Durga out of season (Akal Bodhan) and worshipped her for nine nights to seek her strength. On the tenth day he felled the ten-headed Ravana, which is why effigies of Ravana are burnt across India on Dussehra.
The Pandavas & the Shami Tree
Before their year in disguise, the Pandavas hid their divine weapons in a Shami tree. On Vijayadashami they returned, worshipped the tree, took up their bows again and rode to victory — which is why Shami leaves are exchanged as gold on this day.
