Goddess Kalaratri
The seventh night is Kalaratri's — the darkest and most fearsome form of the Goddess, and the most protective. Her skin is black as the night that ends all time, yet she is called Shubhankari, “the one who does good,” because the terror she carries is turned only on what harms her devotees. Fear itself is what she destroys.
A Famous Tale of the Goddess
In the war against the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, Goddess Parvati shed her golden skin and stepped out as pure black night — Kalaratri.
Her hardest work was the demon Raktabija, whose every falling drop of blood spawned a new clone, so that no army could finish him. Kalaratri drank the blood before it could touch the ground and ended the line of demons that no other form had been able to stop.
Iconography & Symbolism
Goddess Kalaratri is dark, four-armed, and deliberately terrifying to everything but her devotee.
The Mount (Vahana)
She rides a donkey, the humblest of mounts — the Goddess needs no splendour on the night she does her hardest work.
Her Four Hands
One hand holds a sword and one an iron hook; the other two grant blessings and fearlessness.
The Flaming Breath
Flames are said to pour from her nostrils, burning away ignorance, black magic, and every negative force.
Her Unbound Hair
She appears with loose hair and a necklace that flashes like lightning — the look of night itself, unbound and absolute.

She governs Saturn, the stern teacher. Her worship is the foremost remedy for Shani dosha, converting delay and hardship into endurance.
Chakra Connection: Sahasrara (Crown Chakra)
Day 7 reaches the crown, where the sense of a separate self dissolves. This is the night of complete surrender.
How to Do the Puja
Auspicious Color of the Day
Grey (Symbolizing the strength to destroy every evil).
Favorite Flower
Night-blooming Jasmine (Raat ki Rani) or Krishna Kamal.
Special Bhog (Offering)
Jaggery (Gud). Offering jaggery and then giving it away is believed to remove sudden obstacles and grief.
Step-by-Step Ritual:
Bathe early and wear grey.
Water the barley sprouts and tend the Akhand Jyoti.
Place the image of Goddess Kalaratri and offer night-blooming jasmine.
Offer jaggery as bhog, keeping a portion to give away.
Chant the Kalaratri mantra 108 times — traditionally after dusk.
Perform the Aarti and name aloud the fear you are handing over to her.
Special Milestones: Navpatrika Puja & Saraswati Avahan
Saptami begins Durga Puja proper. Nine plants (Navpatrika), each standing for a form of the Goddess, are bathed and installed beside her, and Goddess Saraswati is formally invoked. Many households place their books, instruments, and tools of trade before the altar tonight, to be left untouched until they are taken up again on Vijayadashami.
