Goddess Mahagauri
On the eighth day the Goddess returns as Mahagauri, dazzlingly white and utterly serene — Kalaratri's night resolved into morning. Her name means “the exceedingly fair one.” She is worshipped for forgiveness: it is said that every sin of the devotee, of this life and the last, is washed away by her glance.
A Famous Tale of the Goddess
After years of penance in the forest, Parvati's body had darkened with dust, sun, and ash. When Lord Shiva finally accepted her, he bathed her with the holy water of the Ganga, and her skin shone white as moonlight and lightning. From then on she was Mahagauri.
The story is why her worship is linked to cleansing: what penance earns, grace makes radiant. The devotee who has kept seven nights of discipline is washed clean on the eighth.
Iconography & Symbolism
Goddess Mahagauri is white-skinned, four-armed, and completely at peace.
The Mount (Vahana)
She rides a white bull — the same Nandi of Day 1. The journey has come full circle, but the rider has been transformed.
The Trident
One hand holds the trident, the authority to destroy whatever still stands in the devotee's way.
The Damaru
Another holds Lord Shiva's damaru (drum), marking her as Shivaa, inseparable from him.
Her White Form
Dressed in white and simply adorned, she is compared to the moon and to the conch — settled, absolute purity.

Ruling Planet: Rahu
She governs Rahu, the shadow planet of sudden upheaval and illusion. Her worship steadies a Rahu-afflicted chart and clears confusion of mind.
Chakra Connection: Purifying Every Center
Rather than one chakra, Day 8 is said to cleanse all the centers awakened so far, preparing the devotee for the perfection granted on Day 9.
How to Do the Puja
Auspicious Color of the Day
Purple (Symbolizing ambition, dignity, and spiritual power).
Favorite Flower
Mogra (Arabian Jasmine) or any white flower.
Special Bhog (Offering)
Coconut. Offering a coconut and then gifting it away is believed to bless childless couples.
Step-by-Step Ritual:
Bathe early and wear purple.
Water the barley sprouts — by now they should stand green and tall.
Place the image of Goddess Mahagauri and offer white mogra flowers.
Offer a coconut as bhog.
Chant the Mahagauri mantra 108 times, asking forgiveness rather than favours.
Perform Kanya Pujan: worship nine young girls, feed them, and touch their feet before you eat.
Special Milestones: Durga Ashtami, Sandhi Puja & Kanya Pujan
Ashtami is the festival's most powerful day. Sandhi Puja is performed in the 48 minutes that join Ashtami and Navami — the moment the Goddess is said to have taken the Chamunda form to finish Mahishasura. In homes across North India, Kanya Pujan is performed today: nine young girls are worshipped as the nine Durgas and fed halwa, chana, and puri before the household eats.
