We wish you and your family a blessed Narad Jayanti.
According to the Puranas, Narada was born as a Manasaputra (mind-born son) of Lord Brahma. Narada Jayanti is celebrated primarily to commemorate the birth anniversary of Narada Muni, the celestial sage (Devarshi) who is considered the "messenger of the gods" and the pioneer of communication in the universe.
Step by Step Puja Ritual
Purification and Altar Setup:
The ritual begins with a holy bath before sunrise and wearing fresh "puja vastra" (worship clothing). The worship area is cleaned and sanctified with holy water, and idols or pictures of Narada Muni and Lord Vishnu (with Goddess Lakshmi) are installed on a decorated platform.
Sankalp (The Sacred Vow):
Sit before the deities and take a formal resolution (Sankalp) to observe the fast and perform the puja with full devotion. This is done by holding a small amount of water in the right palm while praying for the successful completion of the day's vows.
Invocation and Installation:
Light a ghee lamp (Deep) and incense sticks (Dhoop) to create a spiritual atmosphere. Perform Aavahana (invocation) and Dhyana (meditation) to respectfully invite Narada Muni and Lord Vishnu into the sacred space to accept the worship.
Shodashopachara (16 Steps of Service):
Perform the standard 16-step worship, which includes washing the deities' feet (Paadya), offering a ritual bath with water or Panchamrut, and presenting sandalwood paste (Chandan), fresh flowers, and Tulsi leaves.
Scriptural Recitation and Chanting:
Engage in the constant chant of "Narayana, Narayana" or the Narada Stuti Mantra: "Om Namo Bhagavate Naradaya Namah". Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama, Narada Purana, or the Narada Bhakti Sutras is considered highly auspicious on this day.
Aarti, and Charity
Conclude the ritual with an Aarti involving light and camphor. The observance is completed by distributing Prasad and performing acts of charity (Daan), such as donating food and clothes to Brahmins and the destitute.
The World's First Journalist:
Narada is revered as the archetypal "First Journalist" because his role involves roaming the three worlds (Triloka) to gather, verify, and disseminate information. He remained impartial between gods and demons, delivered timely news to alter the course of events for the better, and used communication specifically to maintain cosmic order (Dharma).
Transformation into a Woman:
To teach him the power of Maya (divine illusion), Lord Vishnu once instructed Narada to bathe in a pond, where he was instantly transformed into a woman. With his memories of being a sage erased, he married King Taladhvaja, lived as a queen for many years, and bore twelve sons. It was only after his family was killed in a great war and he took another dip in a holy lake that his original form and memory were restored.
Guru of Prahlada:
Narada is the reason Prahlada was born a saint despite being the son of a demon. While Prahlada was still in the womb, Narada provided shelter to his mother, Kayadhu, and instructed the unborn child in the science of Bhakti. This divine education allowed Prahlada to remain untouched by his father's influence from the moment of his birth.
